- People-oriented listeners will typically empathize and search for common areas of interest between them and the person with whom they are engaged. And a people-oriented listener will be more comfortable when interacting in small groups and in face-to-face conversations.
- Action-oriented listeners like information well-organized, error-free and delivered in "sound bites," or short declarative statements. While they listen, however, action-oriented listeners may be skeptical of what they hear initially, which means that they will typically second-guess the underlying motive of the message to determine whether it is true or false.
- Content-oriented listeners are comfortable listening to complex, detailed information. They are most interested in facts, details, and evidence in a message, otherwise they can become sekeptical and reject the message. They are more comfortable engaging in listening and learning about issues, participating in arguments (debate) and are concerned with a speaker's accuracy and credibility.
- Time-oriented listeners like messages delivered succintly and thwy are most interested in bottom line statements and perfer bulleted talking points.
- During the next 24 to 48 hours, keep a listening journal that describes the following:
- Particular listening situations incxluding the goal, the time of day, and the content/reason for listening, and they style used.
- After your journal is complete, discuss the listening style in which you were most comfortable?
- When did you find you used a particular listening style?
When you have completed your journaling, please provide you feedback to this question:
What is the effect of your listening energy cycle on the type of listening you can do successfully?Post your answers here, then let's discuss in class.

I'm a litle bit of all of the litening styles. I like to find common ground with the people I'm talking to, I like well organized error-free information, I'm also comfortable with complex information, but I also like to get straight to the point of the conversation.

I think that I'm a bit of Action oriented and People oriented listener. I do like to converse in smaller groups otherwise I feel overwhelmed with the surroundings and find it hard to concentrate. Getting to the point, being skeptical are charecteristics of mine. For example, when I'm am around friends and friends of friends I find myself conversating with the people I know the most as there are more credible/comftorable to me. I usually find myself second guessing people that I don't know, if listening to them at all.

I am also a people-oriented as well as a action-oriented listener. I prefer the information provided to me to be precise and error-free,but I also feel for the person that the information is coming from. I try to put myself in their shoes.I mostly used this listening style with my daughter. I sympathize with her,but I also don't need all the unnecessary information she usually provides. I believe I am both a people oriented and content oriented listener. I am easily touched by peoples stories when it comes to someone I am close to, like my family or friends, but for other people if they brought it upon themselves I will offer possible ways of coming up with a solution to the problem they are dealing with. On the other hand I also like to listen to peoples stories. When they are telling them, I found myself asking deeper questions to get more details of their experience or encounter. Michelle Arboe
I feel that I am both a people-oriented listener and an action-oriented listener. I would definetly rather have a face to face conversation than to have it over the phone or through e-mail. I also feel more comfortable interacting in smaller groups and have a small close circle of friends. On the contrary I am also an action oriented person as well. I like to have error-free statements to help me better understand the situation. I also like people to get right to the point when speaking over the phone because I would rather be there to help and fix the situation. I feel like I am there for my friends and will always do what I can to help them out.

I'm action-orientated and-people orientated which leads to a struggle! On one hand I care and want listen you and find common intrest bt, on the other hand I want the facts and i want it to be to the point short and sweet with out beating a dead horse!

When I am at work I listen almost exclusively as a time oriented listener. i want to to quickly hear what you want and how you intend the issue resolved. I think this also influences how I speak. in my career the communication seems very linear and the exchange is fast. Although when the conversation becomes escalated the chess amtch begins and I switch into a much more critical, action oriented listener. In my personal life I am a much more content oriented listener and love to engage in dialogue. However the media is the message and paired with my personality I am always evolving my perception of the message as well as the messenger. M. Kriebel
I'm very much an Action-oriented listener. I like information well-organized, error-free. Sometimes It's hard for me to sit through lectures that have an oberload of information and not just getting straight to the point so I know what to study for exams. On the other hand when it comes down to resposibilities requested by my job then I become a more complex listener, because I want to take in all the information given and think on a more challenging level. However, outside of employment I'm very skeptical of what I hear.I will typically second-guess the underlying motive of the message to determine whether it is true or false.

I'm a bit of a people-oriented listener and an action-oriented listener. However, I am more people-oriented. When speaking with someone I'm always seeking a connection with them. I want to understand what they're saying and how they're feeling. I enjoy being able to relate to people. Also, I'm not really comfortable in huge groups except at concerts and such. Generally, I tend to stick to what I know and who I know. I feel more comfortable communicating with people I have close relationships with and trust. I tend to be skeptical of people.

Especially men...haha!
I happen to be a very people-oriented listener. I mostly converse to learn more about how people deal or handle their emotions throughut day to day situations. I also try very hard to listen intently to someone without any judgements; simply going in with an open heart and open mind. I love being able to attatch memories from my past to someone elses challenges and walking them through it as best i can. For the most part i love being a people-oriented listener.
I feel I am a content-oriented listener. When explaining something, I have found myself giving little specific information that is really uneccessary. I can go on and on talking about little details that really do not have much to do with a certain conversation. I also realized that I have always enjoyed to debate my ideas and talk about what it is that I am feeling.

I feel that I am a people oriented listener I can feel connected to other people and their conversations and connect it with things that I have going on with me I would much rather be in a smaller group the more people the harder it is for me

I feel that I might use all those listening styles depending on who or what I'm listening to,but mainly I am a action-oriented listener.

I am more content-oriented listener because, i like to put all my focus on what the other person is saying and when someone is talking i like to get the most important details and evidence of the message, but I am a little bit of Time-oriented listener because depending of the person or the theme of the speech i want to be briefly.

i am a people oriented listener. my friends often come to me for advice because they know that i will really listen and understand how they are feeling, and give them my opinion based on that. but i feel this also makes me a content oriented listener because the details about their problem are important to me. i like listening to the whole story, so i can really put myself in their shoes. this comes into play in all aspects of my life, not just in my personal relationships.

Out of all of the listening styles I would consider myself to be a people-oriented listener. My friends always come to me for advice and I always try to give them the best advice based on trying to put myself in their shoes. I consider myself to be a people-oriented listener most of the time, but I think it depends on the type of relationship I have with certain people and the type of mood I am in and how I will listen to them. For example if I had a bad day at work and my sister asks me for advice when I really don't feel like talking I want just the highlights of what she wants to talk about without any in depth conversation. So I think I can be a mix of the different listening styles depending on the situation.

i have a little of all the listening groups it also depends on the situation
I think we all have a little of all of the different listening styles. Even though i feel i am both a people-oriented listener and an action-oriented lisnener i sometimes think that i may have a splash of the others as well. I have a few traits from the content oriented listener, but not alot. I guess its hard to determine exactly which one you are specificly if you dont know about the different styles. Once you learn the different attributes of each type you will be better informed and therefore will be able to make a better decision on exactly which listening style is yours.
I think it is true of everyone that they use all the different types of listening styles. Different styles may be used on different people because of the relationship they have with them.

I would say I am a people-oriented listener beacuse I like to find that common groud between me and the person speaking but at the same time im a time-oriented listener because lifes short so get to the point.
